JANUA

A nature-loving VR experience

JANUA

A nature-loving VR experience

This educational project from my fourth semester was done together with the Bavarian furniture manufacturer JANUA and included the creation of a VR film with the motto (Nat)urkraft virtuell erleben!

Created: Juni 2018

Client: University Project / JANUA

Work: Concepting, Storyboarding, Modelling, Animating, Previsualizing, Filming

Concepting

The vision for this special project was to create a VR film for the upcoming furniture fair 2019 in Cologne. The company JANUA worked together with the advertising agency EHOCH2, which also brought our university on board as creative support. Through this opportunity we were involved in the creative process from the beginning and were able to participate from the conception to the finished film.

One of our first tasks, besides creating the story idea, was the creation of 360 degree visualization images, which should give the customer a first impression of how the later film might look like and in which shooting locations it should be filmed later. We developed twelve different images, with each of our university team visualizing exactly four scenes. I worked with the 360 degree panorama tool from Photoshop and took responsibility for shots 8, 10, 11 and 12.

Previz Creation

After defining the twelve most important shots, it was the task of the 3D team (of whom I was a part of) to create a so-called previsualization of the entire film. We worked with Blender and I sticked to my previous four scenes.

Recommended video resolution for 360 degree films: at least 2K

With the help of the finished previz and other top-down renderings of the different scenes, the team was able to plan the shooting (which was scheduled for 4 days) much more easily in advance and to make prior decisions about, e.g. the placement of cameras, actors and lights.

Filming and Making Of

During the actual shooting, which was divided into two separate blocks, I was (in addition to supporting the lighting team) assigned the task of the so-called Digital Imagery Technician, who takes care of the data storage of all recordings on the set and ensures that backups are already made directly on site.

The finished 360 degree film is unfortunately not available online, but JANUA has created an OWN WEBSITE for the project, which I would like to refer to herewith. There are also some Making Of videos, in which we students were interviewed and which capture the mood of the whole team and the spirit of the project very well.

ast but not least I would like to use the space here to say thank you to the whole team and to JANUA for the successful and inspiring teamwork.
